Use Cases
Every Form Your Organization Needs
Canvas handles the full range of internal and external forms nonprofit and government organizations rely on. Use it to build grant intake forms that route submissions directly to Compass for review. Create expense reimbursement requests that feed pending transactions into your fund accounting queue. Build budget amendment forms that route to the right approvers before posting. Set up vendor onboarding packets that collect W-9s, insurance certificates, and banking details — and connect to your vendor records automatically. Publish donor acknowledgment forms that log receipts and generate acknowledgment letters. And run compliance checklists that create an auditable record of required verifications, all without a line of code.
Canvas Questions
No. Canvas is designed for program managers, finance staff, and operations teams — not developers. You drag fields onto a form canvas, configure their labels and validation rules, set up any conditional logic you need, and publish. If you can use a word processor, you can build a Canvas form.
When you build a Canvas form, you map it to a Unity record type — a grant, fund, vendor, expense, or other record. When someone submits the form, Canvas creates or updates that record automatically. No export, import, or manual re-entry. The submission data is in Unity from the moment the respondent clicks Submit.
Yes. Canvas includes a workflow routing engine that lets you define approval chains based on dollar thresholds, departments, fund codes, or any other criteria. A budget amendment, for example, can automatically route to a department director, then finance, then the CFO — with each approver notified by email and given a direct link to review and approve or reject.
Yes. Every Canvas submission is logged with a timestamp, the identity of the submitter, every approval action taken, and the final data posted to Unity. This audit trail is stored permanently and is available to auditors on demand. For organizations subject to single audit or funder compliance reviews, Canvas provides the documentation trail those processes require.
